3일, 윤석열 대통령 당선인은 캐서린 제인 레이퍼 주한호주대사를 접견했다.
"한국과 호주 양국이 가치와 규범에 기반한 국제사회 질서 유지에 기여하기 위해 공동의 협력을 더욱 강화해 나갈 필요가 있다"라고 밝혔다.
배현진 당선인 대변인은 이날 서면브리핑에서 윤 당선인이 한국과 호주가 가치와 규범에 기반한 국제사회 질서 유지에 기여하기 위해 공동의 협력을 더욱 강화해 나갈 필요가 있다며 이같이 말했다고 전했다.
이에 레이퍼 대사는 "한국과 호주는 핵심 가치를 공유하는 유사 입장국으로서 다양한 분야에서 협력을 강화시켜 나갈 여지가 큰 것으로 본다고 하며, 주한대사로서 최선의 역할을 다하겠다"고 화답했다.
또 쿼드는 미국·일본·호주·인도 4개국의 협의체로 인도태평양 지역에서 중국의 영향력을 견제하는 것이 목적.
윤 당선인은 후보 시절 쿼드(Quad·미국·일본·호주·인도의 협의체) 워킹그룹에 참여한 뒤 단계적으로 정식 가입을 모색하겠다고 공약한 바 있다.
다만 한국이 쿼드와 협력하기 위해서는 호주를 비롯한 회원국들의 협조가 필수적이다.
한국과 관계가 좋지 않은 일본이나, 비교적 중립노선을 보여 온 인도가 동의할지 미지수라는 관측이 제기된 바 있다. 미국의 젠 사키 백악관 대변인도 2일(현지시간) 브리핑에서 한국의 쿼드 합류 가능성 등에 대한 질문을 받고 "쿼드는 쿼드로 유지될 것"이라고 선을 그었다.
한편 윤 당선인은 6·25 전쟁에 레이퍼 대사의 외조부를 포함한 호주군 1만 7천여 명이 참전해 자유민주주의 수호를 위해 젊음을 바친데 경의를 표하며 한국과 호주는 '피로 맺은 혈맹'이라고도 강조했다. 이에 레이퍼 대사는 감사의 뜻을 표했다.
윤 당선인은 또 양국이 오랜 역사적 연대를 토대로 전략적 소통과 방산협력, 탄소중립, 우주, 사이버 등 미래 첨단산업에 관한 협력을 계속 확대할 것을 기대했다.
특히 자원부국인 호주와 핵심광물 공급망 안정화 등 경제안보 협력을 더욱 강화해 나가자고 말했다.

In addition, Quad is a consultative body of four countries: the United States, Japan, Australia, and India, and aims to check China's influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
When Yoon was a candidate, he promised to join the Quad (U.S., Japan, Australia, and India) working group and seek official membership step by step.
However, in order for Korea to cooperate with the Quad, cooperation from Australia and other member countries is essential.
It has been observed that it is unknown whether Japan, which has a bad relationship with Korea, or India, which has been relatively neutral, will agree. White House spokesman Gen. Saki of the U.S. also drew a line at a briefing on the 2nd (local time) when asked about the possibility of South Korea joining the quad, saying, "The quad will be maintained as a quad."
Meanwhile, Yoon paid tribute to 17,000 Australian soldiers, including Rafer's maternal grandfather, who dedicated their youth to protect liberal democracy in the Korean War, and stressed that Korea and Australia are also blood allies. In response, Raeffer expressed his appreciation.
Yoon also expected the two countries to continue to expand cooperation in future high-tech industries such as strategic communication and defense cooperation, carbon neutrality, space and cyber based on their long historical solidarity.
