불교계 이슈를 다루는 유튜브 ‘야단법석’이 전 조계종 자승 총무원장 죽음문제(2023년 11월 29일 사망)를 연속으로 다루고 있다. 시청자가 구름처럼 몰리고 있다고 한다. 그 만큼 관심이 많다는 이야기인 셈이다. 3년 전 사망 사건이 왜 이제 와서 ‘불교계 핫이슈’로 떠오르는 것일까? 그 내막(內幕)이 궁금하다.

필자는 조계종 1979년-1981년까지 조계종 출입기자로 일했다. 그러하니 조계종 내부사정을 조금 아는 편이다.

자승 스님은 서의현 스님이 총무원장을 할 때, 종단의 사정(司政) 관련 간부로 재임하면서부터 힘을 얻기 시작했다. 그는 명실공히 조계종단의 최대 실세로 부상했었다. 2009년부터 2017년까지 총무원장으로 재임하면서 인사권과 재산권을 행사, 그를 견제할 실세가 전무(全無)할 정도로 강자(强者)였다. 최 강자였다. 조계종 본사-말사들의 인사권(人事權)를 총 관리하면서, 이를 이용해서, 거대 규모의 재력을 확보한 것으로, 종단 안에, 널리 알려져 있다. 종단의 권력+재력을 이용, 정치권까지 막강한 인맥이 구축됐다. 그는 조계종 종단을 쥐락펴락한 실세로 군림했었다.
