The Canadian Public Health Agency (PHAC) said in a statement on the 19th (local time) that it was notified that two samples entrusted by the National Institute of Microbiology (NML) in Quebec had tested positive for monkey cephalopods. "These are the first confirmed cases in Canada."
From this month, "monkeypox," a common infectious disease with a series of outbreaks in Europe and the United States, has spread to Canada and Australia.
The Public Health Bureau said, "It has been found that an American infected with monkeypox recently visited Montreal, Quebec," adding, "We are investigating movements and contacts in cooperation with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)."
AFP reported that Montreal's public health authorities also held a press conference and said, "We are investigating 17 suspected cases."
In Australia, travelers who have been to Europe have been confirmed to have monkeypox or showed suspicious symptoms.
According to Reuters, "Australia's Victoria State Department of Health announced on the 20th that a man in his 30s who entered Melbourne from the UK on the 16th was confirmed to be a monkey's head."
Separately, the Health Ministry of New South Wales (NSW) in Australia also reported that a man in his 40s who recently came to Sydney from Europe showed symptoms similar to monkey cephalopods a few days after entering the country, so the parties and housemates went into quarantine.
Monkey cephalopods caused by the monkey cephalopods virus are similar to smallpox, but show relatively weak symptoms, and the fatality rate is 3-6%.
It is known that it is a endemic disease in the rainforest areas of Central and West Africa and is infected by contact with animals or pathogens, such as rodents and primates.
In other areas, there have been occasional infections. However, this rapid spread is unusual because it is rare to cause human-to-human infections.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said, "The human-to-human infection of the monkey head virus is usually caused by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated bedding."
In Europe and the United States, the number of cases of monkey head infection has been increasing rapidly since the beginning of this month.
BBC reported, "In the case of the UK, since the first case on the 6th, nine confirmed cases have been reported until the 18th, and confirmed cases of monkeypox have also been identified in Spain (7 cases), Portugal (5 cases), Sweden (1 case), and Italy (1 case)."
In addition, the BBC added, "It is reported that French health authorities have also identified suspected cases of monkeypox and have taken related measures."
