호주오픈 테니스 대회가 25년 만에 윌리엄스 자매 없이 열린다.
호주 언론매체 헤럴드 선은 1일(한국시간) "비너스 윌리엄스가 올해 호주오픈에 출전하지 않는다"라고 보도했다. 앞서 동생 세리나 윌리엄스가 호주오픈 불참을 선언한 가운데 비너스마저 불참을 결정하면서 자매의 동반 불참이 확정됐다.
세리나는 몸상태가 좋지 않다. 지난해 7월부터 햄스트링 부상에 시달리고 있어 일찌감치 호주오픈 출전을 포기했다.
비너스는 세계랭킹이 318위까지 내려가 있어 자력 출전이 불가능한 상태다. 와일드 카드를 받고 출전하는 길이 있었지만 불참이 확정되면서 호주오픈에서 볼 수 없게 됐다.
윌리엄스 자매가 호주오픈에 동반 불참하는건 1997년 이후 처음이다. 한 명만 불참하는 경우는 있었지만 이번처럼 둘 다 호주오픈에 나서지 않는 건 실로 오랜만이다. 메이저대회로는 지난해 US오픈 이후 2개 대회 연속 동반 불참이 확정됐다.
약 20년간 여자프로테니스계를 호령했던 윌리엄스 자매는 40대가 되면서 서서히 세계 정상에서 물러나고 있다. 2017년 호주오픈 여자단식 결승에서 자매가 격돌해 세리나가 우승, 비너스가 준우승을 차지했다. 오랫동안 단식 1위였던 세리나도 그때 이후 메이저대회 정상에서 내려온 상태다.
반면 최근 코로나19 검사에서 양성 반응을 보였던 라파엘 나달(스페인)은 호주오픈 개최지인 멜버른에 도착한 사진을 자신의 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS) 계정에 올렸다.
나달은 호주에 입성한 만큼 코로나19로 인한 변수가 생기지 않는다면 호주오픈에도 출전할 것으로 보인다.
올해 호주오픈에 나달, 로저 페더러(스위스), 노박 조코비치(세르비아)로 이뤄진 남자 테니스 '빅3'가 모두 불참할 가능성은 사실상 낮아졌다.
페더러는 무릎 부상 여파로 호주오픈 불참을 선언했다. 코로나19 백신 접종 여부를 밝히지 않고 있는 조코비치는 호주오픈의 코로나19 관련 방역 지침이 정해지면 출전 여부를 밝히겠다고 말한 바 있다.
한편 호주오픈은 오는 17일 호주 멜버른에서 막을 올린다.

The Australian Open tennis tournament will be held without Williams sisters for the first time in 25 years.
Australian media Herald Sun reported on the 1st (Korea Standard Time) that "Venus Williams will not participate in this year's Australian Open." While her younger brother Serina Williams earlier declared her absence from the Australian Open, even Venus decided not to attend, confirming her sister's absence.
Serina is not in a good condition. He has been suffering from a hamstring injury since July last year, so he gave up playing in the Australian Open early.
Venus is unable to participate on her own as her world ranking has fallen to 318th place. There was a way to play after receiving a wild card, but as his absence was confirmed, he could not be seen at the Australian Open.
It is the first time since 1997 that the Williams sisters have been absent from the Australian Open together. There were cases where only one person was absent, but it's been a long time since both of them did not participate in the Australian Open like this. As a major tournament, he has been confirmed to be absent from two consecutive tournaments since the US Open last year.

On the other hand, Rafael Nadal (Spain), who recently tested positive for COVID-19, posted a photo of his arrival in Melbourne, the venue of the Australian Open, on his social network service (SNS) account.
As Nadal entered Australia, he is also expected to compete in the Australian Open if there are no variables caused by COVID-19.
The possibility that the men's tennis "Big Three," consisting of Nadal, Roger Federer (Switzerland) and Novak Djokovic (Serbia), will all be absent from this year's Australian Open is virtually lowered.
Federer declared his absence from the Australian Open in the aftermath of a knee injury. Djokovic, who has not announced whether he will be vaccinated against COVID-19, said he would announce his participation once the Australian Open's quarantine guidelines related to COVID-19 have been set.
Meanwhile, the Australian Open will kick off in Melbourne, Australia, on the 17th.
