대한민국 대표 창작음악제가 열린다.
‘아르코(Art Council Korea) 한국창작음악제’(이하 아창제)가 2025년 1월 18일 국립극장 해오름극장, 2월 20일 예술의전당 콘서트홀에서 개최된다.
한국문화예술위원회(Art Council Koreaㆍ위원장 정병국)와 한국창작음악제추진위원회(위원장 이건용)가 주최하는 음악제다.
국내 고전음악계는 서양 음악이 강세다. ‘아창제’는 한국 전통 창작곡에 대한 틀을 다지고 대중적 사랑을 받기위해 2007년부터 시작됐다. 올해로 16회를 맞았다.

행사를 앞두고 한국문화예술위원회 정병국 위원장은 “특별히 이번 음악제에는 최근 무한공항 제주항공 여객기 참사 희생자와 유가족에 대한 애도의 마음을 담았다.”면서 “미래가 기억할 오늘의 우리음악을 선보이게 돼 크나큰 영광”이라고 말했다.
또 정 위원장은 “우리의 삶과 숨결이 담긴 K창작곡의 우수성을 세계에 알리겠다.”면서 “K창작음악의 발전을 위해 열정을 불사르는 분들께 깊은 존경의 마음을 전한다.”라고 덧붙였다.

‘아창제’는 순수 창작곡만으로 구성됐다. 작곡ㆍ지휘ㆍ연주자들이 무대에서 창작 관현악곡을 연주한다.
‘아창제’의 작품심사는 엄격하기로 유명하다.
매년 국악과 양악부문의 관현악곡 작품이 공모되고 블라인드 심사를 통해 출품 곡을 선정한다. 이런 과정을 통해 ‘아창제’는 현재까지 124명의 작곡가, 총171작품을 발굴했다.
특히 지난해에는 15주년을 맞아 역대 선정 작품으로 프로그램을 구성했다. 그렇게 15주년 기념 특별 연주회를 가졌다.
올해 공모에는 총126작품(국악부문 45곡ㆍ양악부문 81곡)이 접수됐다. 역대 가장 많은 숫자의 작품들이 공모에 참여했다. 그만큼 경쟁률이 더욱 치열했다는 게 관계자 설명이다.
마찬가지로 이번 ‘제16회 아창제’에 선보이는 작품들도 철저한 블라인드 심사를 통해 선정했다. 이렇게 엄선된 작품, 국악ㆍ양악 부문별 5작품씩 총 10작품이 이번 ‘아르코 한국창작음악제’에서 연주된다.
국악부문은 1월 18일(토) 국립극장 해오름극장 개최된다. 국립국악관현악단(지휘 김성국)이 연주한다.
김신애의 ‘걸리버 여행기’서곡, 김상진의 정악대금과 국악 관현악을 위한 ‘청공의 소리’(협연 유홍), 최지혜의 첼로 협주곡 ‘미소’(협연 장우리), 최윤숙의 25현 가야금과 국악 관현악을 위한‘도롱이를 쓴 그슨새’(협연 박순아), 이정호의 국악관현악 ‘아부레이수나’가 연주된다.
이중 초연 작품인 최윤숙 작곡가의 25현 가야금과 국악 관현악을 위한 ‘도롱이를 쓴 그슨새’에는 스토리텔링이 담겨있다. 눈길을 끄는 배경이다.
도롱이는 짚이나 띠 등을 엮어 만든 제주도의 비옷을 말한다.
또 ‘그슨새’는 제주도의 특성이 무척 잘 드러나는 귀신, 혹은 요괴이다. ‘그슨새’는 ‘주젱이’라는 제주도의 우장을 뒤집어 쓴 채 길거리를 돌아다닌다고. ‘주젱이’는 주저리의 방언. 낟가리 위에 빗물이 새어들지 않도록 덮는 것을 칭한다.
제주도에서는 사악한 기운이나 액을 ‘새’라고 하거나 원통하게 죽은 영혼은 ‘새’가 된다고 믿기도 했다. 그 이유는 한자 ‘사(邪)’자가 와전되어 ‘새’로 음이 바뀌었다는 추측이 있다.
또 다른 추측에 의하면 옛날 제주도에서는 살인을 한 죄인들에게 ‘주젱이’를 씌우는 일이 있었는데, 그러한 죄인들이 죽어서 요괴가 된 것이라고도 한다.
그슨새도 ‘새’자가 붙어서 아주 사악한 악귀를 말한다. 일반적인 요괴나 귀신들과는 달리 낮에 돌아다니며 혼자 있는 사람을 해치고 홀려서 죽인다고 한다.

최 작곡가는 “이번에 발표하는 ‘도롱이를 쓴 그슨새’는 제주도 민요인 ‘이야홍 타령’과 제주도 정통 요괴인 ‘그슨새’를 주제로 만들어진 창작곡”이라면서 “제주도 소리꾼들이 한반도 민요의 가락을 모방하고 새로운 사설을 추가하여 만든 민요가 ‘이야홍 타령’”이라고 설명했다.
또 “‘이야홍 타령’은 주로 여흥적인 상황에서 불렀으나 지역에 따라서는 일을 하면서 부르는 노래로 제주도의 자연풍광과 남녀 간의 사랑이야기, 혹은 인생무상에 대한 내용으로 이루어져 있어 제주도의 지형적, 생태적 특징이 잘 나타나는 민요”라면서 “연주시간 18분인 이번 작품은 ‘그슨새’에 대한 설화와 이야홍 타령을 주제로 음악이 전개된다. 해당 곡에서는 25현 가야금이 ‘그슨새’의 역할을 하였으며, 피리는 남자, 거문고는 여자의 역할로 애잔한 스토리텔링을 꾸몄다”라고 덧붙였다.
한편 양악부문은 2월 20일(목) 예술의전당 콘서트홀에서 개최된다. 국립심포니오케스트라(지휘 정치용)가 연주한다.
작품은 김신의 오케스트라를 위한 ‘LOGBOOK 1’, 박다은의 오케스트라를 위한 ‘물의 노래’, 이강규의 오케스트라를 위한 ‘NIGHT RETURNS’, 임영진의 오케스트라를 위한 ‘바람에 흔들리는 갈대’, 전예은의‘장난감 교향곡’이다.
현시대 가장 창의적인 관현악곡이 연주될 제16회 ‘아창제 연주회’는 국내외 활발히 활동하는 다양한 연령대의 작곡가들과 작품을 만날 수 있어 기대를 모은다.
제16회 아창제 관람료는 R석 3만원, S석 2만원, A석 1만원으로 국악부문은 국립극장, 양악부문은 예술의전당과 인터파크에서 예매 가능하다.
